University of California San Diego and Fundación Vamos México: An alliance for education

The University of California San Diego (UCSD), in alliance with Centro Fox and Vamos México Foundation, launches a pilot project for community education in San Cristobal, Guanajuato. The creation of the “Centro de Oportunidades” will have a considerable impact on the youth and families of the communities and cities surrounding Centro Fox.

Pliny the Elder, a first century Latin writer, said that “the brain is not a vessel to be filled, but a lamp to be lit“.

Vamos México Foundation seeks to strengthen the personal growth of young people through its ALAS Program (Activating Leaders in Social Action), which has a strong alliance with the University of California San Diego, which allows young people to develop a social impact project in their community, culminating in an educational trip with the University itself.

During the Pilot Test, six of our graduated leaders shared a sample class according to their specialties. These classes were prepared for our friends from the University of California San Diego, who with great joy extended their congratulations and points of view to continue growing in their fields.

The participating speakers performed remarkably well, talking about their different passions and professions. They were:

  • Reyna Guadalupe Perez Guerrero, presenting the topic Mechatronics, currently titled as Ing. in Mechatronics.
  • Cristina Murillo, presenting an Induction to the Digital World, student of the Bachelor in Education.
  • Jennifer Sánchez, presented an Introduction to Leadership, Industrial Engineering student.
  • Miriam Castro, presenting on Young Leaders, Law student.
  • Frida Cecilia Gamino Guerrero, presenting on Food and Microorganisms, Biochemical Engineering student.
  • Rubi Segoviano, presenting on Creative Thinking, Graphic Design student.

Within this educational partnership, the University of California San Diego offers linkage to its MI UNIVERSIDAD program. This aims to offer culturally focused, strengths-based educational experiences for K-12 students and adults, including pre-college programming, workforce development, teacher training, parent and caregiver support in Spanish.

This program benefits from multiple collaborations with various partners on the UC San Diego campus in the United States as well as in Latin America, including the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at UC San Diego, University of California Television, Centro Fox in Mexico and Reality Changers in San Diego.

The meeting was held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, in parallel with Children’s Day. It’s no coincidence, or just a matter of naming a date, as it makes more sense that one of the presentations was about creativity, not losing it over time, keeping the children within us to continue developing our imagination, vital for any activity we wish to exercise for ourselves and others.
